Fernlea Green Energy Project

spacer EFW Facility in Delhi, ONspacerNext generation spacer
spacer A clean energy-from-waste plant being developed by Fernlea Green Energy in partnership with Elementa Group will inject $30 million into the Norfolk economy while diverting up to 25,000 tonnes of solid waste annually from local landfill sites.
spacer
The clean energy technology in this plant is the way of the future. It produces energy as cleanly as a natural-gas fired plant and virtually eliminates the need for landfill sites.

The plant will be built at Fernlea Flowers' greenhouse operations in Delhi, Ontario. Fernlea Green Energy is applying for approval from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment to produce five megawatts of electricity at the plant, enough to power up to 4,000 homes.
spacer
The plant will also generate enough heat as a by-product to replace the fossil fuel boiler systems now being used in Fernlea greenhouses and allow for future expansion of greenhouse operations.

spacer The plant will use technology developed by the Elementa Group of St. Catharines, Ontario. Waste is heated in a closed, oxygen-free kiln up to 950 degrees Celsius. Steam is then injected into the chamber, creating a synthetic gas, which is filtered and used to generate electricity. The process consumes 98% of the waste by volume, leaving the remaining 2% as aggregate that can be incorporated into construction materials.
spacer
This is an oxygen-free process. There is no incineration involved so no harmful by-products such as dioxins and furans are produced. The plant will produce significantly less greenhouse gas emissions compared to a fossil fuel power plant of similar size.
spacer
The plant will create upwards of 20 new full-time jobs in addition to the employment created during construction of the plant and any new employment opportunities as a result of possible expansion of Fernlea greenhouses.
spacer
This could virtually eliminate the need for new landfill sites in Norfolk County.
